The scale of food waste

According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations one-third of food produced is wasted which amounts to about 1.3 billion tonnes per year. In Denmark alone, average household throws away about 180 kg of food every year, adding up to 247,000 tonnes in 2017. About 55% of that food is still edible when thrown away.
